NOT TO BE

Not to Be

She told me she used to listen to Miles Davis

While she sat, glinting like silver

At the bar stool

Stealing the light from the moon with her youth

I always thought the secret to outsmart fading away

Was McCandless’ walk into the wild

Or a faucet eternally leaking

Or ignoring that people aren’t who we want them to be

She said

She was scared to be the woman in the cereal isle

Shopping for Krispy O’s

Whispering low into her cell phone

About a guy named Ken

So she decided not to be

And when she decided to stop bribing the moon for her light

And she shook hands with content

She was satisfied

And she sent her well wishes to the moon

And listened to Miles Davis

Sitting on the kitchen floor

With an ear pressed against the stereo

And her eyes closed shut
